Washington, D.C. (July 28, 2020) — Oppenheim + Zebrak, LLP (“O+Z”), is delighted to announce that founding partners Matt Oppenheim and Scott Zebrak have been named to Billboard magazine’s prestigious Top Music Lawyers list for 2020. The selection honors lawyers on the front lines of the music industry’s legal battles and deals.
Matt and Scott have represented the music industry for decades, dating back to seminal cases like Napster, LimeWire, and others. Billboard highlights Matt’s and Scott’s recent efforts in a hotly contested, high-profile litigation against Cox Communications, an internet service provider. In that case, O+Z secured a jury verdict finding Cox liable for contributory and vicarious copyright infringement and providing for a $1 billion damage award. The O+Z firm represented the major record companies and music publishers, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and EMI Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, and Warner Chappell Music.
“It’s not every day that a lawyer gets to change the legal landscape for copyright owners. We are grateful to our clients in the music industry for giving us the opportunity to represent them in the Sony v. Cox case, and we’re pleased that Billboard magazine has recognized our efforts,” said Oppenheim and Zebrak. “This was a true team effort, leveraging the talented, deep bench of attorneys we have at O+Z. We feel strongly that those who knowingly turn a blind eye to repeated copyright infringement should be held accountable, and we remain steadfast in our dedication to the music industry.”
