Associate

Bret Matera is an associate at Oppenheim + Zebrak, LLP, where his practice focuses on the firm’s copyright and other intellectual property and litigation matters.

Before joining O+Z, Bret was an associate at Selendy Gay Elsberg PLLC (now Selendy Gay PLLC), where he litigated complex commercial cases in federal and state court and private arbitration. Bret has represented clients at all stages of litigation, including investigation, pre-litigation strategy, complaint filing, discovery, and trial in federal court. Before entering private practice, he clerked for Judge Catherine C. Eagles in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Bret earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar for academic achievement. While at Columbia, he also served as a Senior Editor on the Columbia Law Review and as a teaching and research assistant to Columbia University President Lee Bollinger. Before law school, Bret earned a B.A. in International Studies and a B.S. in Economics from American University.

Bret is a member of the New York and North Carolina state bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of New York, the Middle District of North Carolina, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
