New York, N.Y. (July 10, 2026) — O+Z filed a putative class action on behalf of three major publishers and a best-selling author against Google LLC for its willful infringement of millions of copyrighted works.
The case represents a unified effort by trade, education, and academic publishers and the authors they represent to hold Google accountable for its flagrant disregard for copyright law. As detailed in the Complaint: “Desperate to maintain its online dominance, Google abandoned its early motto of ‘Don’t be evil’ and engaged in one of the most prolific infringements of copyrighted materials in history.” Among other things, Google illegally copied and developed Gemini using copyrighted works obtained for strictly limited purposes in connection with its Google Books search tool and other Google services.
Plaintiffs in the case are Hachette Book Group, Inc.; Cengage Learning, Inc.; Elsevier Inc.; and author Scott Turow.
O+Z represents Plaintiffs along with co-counsel Keller Rohrback L.L.P., with whom it will seek appointment as class counsel to represent all class members.
